About Tarangire
Tarangire is often the gentlest introduction to a Tanzanian safari. Its rolling landscape is dotted with enormous baobab trees, some of them centuries old, and the Tarangire River draws wildlife from a wide surrounding area, especially as the dry season progresses.
The park is best known for its elephants. Family herds of dozens gather along the riverbanks, and you will often share the road with them at close range from the safety of your vehicle. Buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and impala are also plentiful, and the park is excellent for birdwatching, with well over 500 species recorded.
Because it is a comparatively short drive from Arusha and usually quieter than the better-known parks, Tarangire works beautifully as the opening chapter of a longer itinerary, allowing you to settle into safari life before heading on to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
